MuPDF is a lightweight PDF viewer and toolkit written in portable C. The renderer in MuPDF is tailored for high quality anti-aliased graphics. It renders text with metrics and spacing accurate to within fractions of a pixel for the highest fidelity in reproducing the look of a printed page on screen. MuPDF has a small footprint. A binary that includes the standard Roman fonts is only one megabyte. A build with full CJK support (including an Asian font) is approximately five megabytes. MuPDF has support for all non-interactive PDF 1.7 features, and the toolkit provides a simple API for accessing the internal structures of the PDF document. Example code for navigating interactive links and bookmarks, encrypting PDF files, extracting fonts, images, and searchable text, and rendering pages to image files is provided.

bg5pdf is a simple wrapper for wrapping Big5 encoding text file into PDF file by using PDFlib. The output of this program does not contain embedding fonts. You have to download Acrobat Acroread Asianfont pack to view and print the output file. This wrapper does not provide any formatting function except simple line wrapping. If you need sophisticated formatting, you should try CJK-LaTex or other equivalent tools.

Unicode define some character width as ambiguous. Software determines the width of characters accroding the context. However, sometimes it is hard or impossible to know the context. Thus, this port dirty fixes some console software, let them recognize all characters in Big5 encoding range as double width. Now you will be happy with UTF8 terminal and Big5 fonts :) This port fixes the zh_TW.UTF-8 locale for wcwidth(3) and wcswidth(3).

Font engine for complex non-Roman writing systems
Graphite is a project under development within SIL'ss Non-Roman Script Initiative and Language Software Development groups to provide rendering capabilities for complex non-Roman writing systems. The original goal was a system for the Windows platform; the system has also been ported to Linux. Graphite can be used to create "smart fonts" capable of displaying writing systems with various complex behaviors. With respect to the Text Encoding Model, Graphite handles the "Rendering" aspect of writing system implementation.
