KDE Base Applications consists of what runs on the desktop. This
module isn't a complete collection of essential applications that a
user would expect on a desktop (such as e-mail and calculator). This
package is the basic set of applications beyond the workspace that KDE
applications can assume are installed. These applications should have
no problem running on Windows, OS X, Gnome, etc. as stand alone
applications if the user wanted to use them there.
EditorConfig helps developers define and maintain consistent coding
styles between different editors and IDEs.
This package provides the core library and editorconfig(1) executable
both written in C for use by text editor plugins supporting
EditorConfig parsing.
A port of an extremely powerful FTE editor that was
originally developed for OS/2 and ported by its author,
Marko Macek, to X11/UNIX.
Among other features it supports syntax highlighting,
compiler invocation and error parsing and folds.

GHEX is a simple binary editor, allowing binary files to be edited in
both hex and ascii. It features find and replace functions and conversion
between binary, octal, decimal and hexadecimal values, making use of an
alternative, user-configurable MDI concept.
gnotepad+ is a simple Gnome based text editor. It also has built-in simple
HTML editing with previews directed to Netscape.
A free collaborative editor.
Heme is intended to be fast and portable console hex editor for Unix-like
systems. It has undo support (number of undo operations is only limited by
available memory), ability to fill a range of addresses with the specified
byte, ability to search for a single byte or character string. Offsets can
be given in hexadecimal, octal, or decimal forms. There are two editing
modes: hex (binary) and ASCII (text).
Heme uses standard curses library for screen and input handling, and offers
colors support (they can be set in the configuration file).
hnb is a program to organize many kinds of data in one place,
including addresses, TODO lists, ideas, book reviews, brainstorming,
speech outlines, etc. It stores data in XML format, and is capable
of native export to ASCII and HTML.
HT is a file editor/viewer/analyzer for executables. The goal is to combine
the low-level functionality of a debugger and the usability of IDEs. We aim
towards a perfect hex-editing ability and support of the most important file
formats.
Support means that HT will be able to correctly display and modify the
executable header, image and other extensions specific to the file (import/
export sections, relocations, debugging information etc.). Support will
probably include the following file formats:
- Win32 portable executables (PE) (good support)
- Unix executable and linkable format (ELF) (good support)
- DOS standard executables (MZ) (supported)
- Win32 linear executables (LE) (supported)
- Windows/OS2 "new" executables (NE) (supported)
- Unix common object file format (COFF) + DJGPP COFF (supported)
- OS2 linear executables (LX)
- Microsoft object files (.obj)
jEdit is an Open Source programmer's text editor written in Java. It is
released under the GNU General Public License. jEdit was written for Java 1.1
with Swing 1.1, and also runs under Java 2.
As far as text editors written in Java go, jEdit is one of the best. It has an
easy to use, intuitive interface, and enough features and flexibility to please
even the most hard-core programmer. A very incomplete list of jEdit's features
follows.
o Syntax highlighting for 200+ file types (including C, C++, Java, Perl, etc)
o Semi-intelligent auto indent in C, C++ and Java modes
o Bracket highlighting and matching
o Powerful macro system
o Auto-expanding abbreviations for the frequiently used strings
o Powerful search and replace - supports regular expressions and multiple file
search/replace; Search and replace operations can be recorded in macros
o Any number of strings and caret positions can be stored for later use in
so-called registers
o Rectangular selections for working with column-based files
o Any number of editor windows can be opened, and each view can be split into
multiple panes for side-by-side viewing of multiple files
o Unlimited undo/redo
